WHAT IS A BIOSPHERE PROJECT
A Biosphere Project was initially conceived as a photographic documentary travel project.
I am a visual artist, but in 2020, after a long period of “soul-searching,” I decided to put my visual art practice on hold to devote myself entirely to the many ecological crises we are already in the midst of—and of which the climate crisis is just one (see my “Statement of Intention” from 2020)
Since I’ve also been involved in photography my entire life, it seemed like a logical step to use photography to help raise awareness among the general public about the damage already done, but also about new ideas and pathways towards a different, ecological civilization. You can read more about that original travel project here.
During my research for that travel project, two things happened: on the one hand, I began to realize that these ecological crises extend much further and run much deeper than I had initially thought, and that none of the ‘solutions’ currently being discussed in the public debate even come close to what is needed.
On the other hand, I began to see more and more clearly how our current disastrous treatment of our living planet is largely caused by the narrative we believe about the world and about ourselves—that of reductionist materialism. As a result, my research gradually shifted more and more toward the realm of metaphysics and worldview.
Ultimately, this led me to put the originally planned travel project on hold and focus entirely on those aspects of our worldview that make it nearly impossible to change course, as well as on other possible worldviews that might actually make such a change possible. I am reporting on this quest in my blog and in a first book that is currently in progress.
WHAT IS INFINITE MIND
Infinite Mind is a project that grew organically out of A Biosphere Project. It was initially conceived as a photographic travel project, but during the research and preparation for it, I realized that I was becoming increasingly fascinated by aspects of worldviews that underlie the current crisis between humanity and nature.
As I learned more about ancient wisdom traditions from both the East and the West, I also noticed how they show a remarkable similarity to the latest developments in various branches of science, particularly quantum physics, astrophysics, the study of consciousness, and evolutionary biology.
It also became increasingly clear how certain currents in Western thought are directly responsible for our current disastrous relationship with our living world, our biosphere.
This fascination led to more and more writings about these parallels, and caused me to explore this topic more extensively than the original premise. As a result, I considered renaming the project entirely and creating a new website to reflect this change in direction.
Ultimately, I decided to let A Biosphere Project continue to exist, while also launching a sort of sister project: Infinite Mind.
In A Biosphere Project, I will continue to report on my evolving insights in the nature of the many ecological and other crises that our global industrial “civilization” is going through. I will also focus on insights from deep ecology and systems theory to share new ideas and paths toward an ecological civilization.
Infinite Mind will focus on all aspects of worldview and metaphysics that currently shape that “civilization” and often remain beneath the radar of our own consciousness—beliefs so widespread that they are taken for granted and no longer questioned.
Ultimately, the goal is to connect ecology and worldview, to help clarify the relationship between the two.
All civilizations that have ever existed were founded on a worldview—a mythos that gave their world meaning and purpose. Our current worldview is characterized above all by nihilism and meaninglessness, and these are not good guides for building an ecological civilization.
So we now need a new worldview to regain our sense of agency and to reconnect with the planet, the universe—and with ourselves.
This can enable us all to contribute to a better world, rather than waiting on the sidelines for someone else to solve it all.
